Estate Planning

Do I need a will, a trust, or both?

A will and a trust serve different purposes, and some people use both. The right approach depends on your assets, family circumstances, and planning goals.

A will generally gives instructions about your estate after death. A trust can provide instructions for assets held in the trust, including how they are managed or distributed. Creating a trust does not automatically place all your assets in it, and having a will does not by itself avoid probate.

An attorney can review how your assets are owned, any beneficiary designations, and your wishes before recommending a plan.
